I just tried to go on my 5-mile run and got a half-mile in and had to turn around and walk the rest of the way home. My left calf was screaming at me! Now my right ankle is starting to hurt because other muscles are trying to compensate for my calf. Ben is trying to loosen it up right now. I’m going to start doing my strength training again and hopefully that will help some. I used to strength train regularly and then I don’t know what happened. Dropped the ball on that one. I’m such a good personal trainer. Ha.
Anyways…on Saturday I ran my 7th half marathon at the Jenks Half. It’s a smaller race that is a fundraiser for the Jenks high school cross-country teams. I think it’s awesome that they are able to pull off a half marathon and a 5k as a fundraiser. This is also the cheapest half I’ve ever ran at 35 dollars! Can’t beat that!
There was no expo for this race. We picked up our packets at a local running store.
What I Wore:
The weather was really nice for November so I wore a tank top from Target that I love! I have 3 of them and I wear them often. I wore Pro Compression arm sleeves and socks. I wore Oiselle shorts and a BICbands headband. I should have gone without the arm sleeves… I got hot towards the end of the race.
BEFORE:- My wake up call was 6 AM for an 8AM race. I ate a piece of pumpkin bread along with 2 of the snickers in the pic. At 7 I took AdvoCare O2 Gold and some ENEGRYbits. I ate half of the GU at mile 7 and then threw the rest out… I couldn’t stomach the whole package. I also ran with Nuun.
We ran through the outer parts of Jenks. They had water stops throughout the course with the Jenks high school CC teams working them. It was fun to see them cheering us on. They actually ran out of water at a repeat stop though. This is just one of the reasons why I run with a water bottle, I rarely stop at water stops durning half’s. There were also some port-a-potties throughout. The course was pretty hilly but the hills were spread out nicely. I’m sure it really wasn’t but it felt like mile 6 was straight uphill! This was my slowest mile. I have got to start running some hills in my training runs… We finished with a lap around the track.
I didn’t have any goals for this run since my calves were still acting up. I was actually a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to finish. Luckily that was not the case. My left calf felt great for the entire race but the right one started hurting at mile 2.50. It wasn’t a constant hurt… about every half mile I could feel it, especially on the hills. I’m not sure what’s going on there but at least I was able to finish. There were a few times when I thought about walking but I just keep repeating Isaiah 41:10 and kept going. This was a hard race to go without music. The course was boring and there wasn’t a lot of people cheering you on. But the race was only 35 dollars so I cant really complain. I always pick out a few people in the beginning of a race that I try to beat… This keeps me motivated. One of the girls that I picked out was ahead of me for most of the race.. I passed her once but then she passed me right back. I caught her when we entered the track and when I passed her she started to sprint, so naturally I picked up the pace and really started to move.. I was surprised at how much I had left! My slowest mile was 8:44 and fastest was 7:57. My time was 1:49 at an 8:17 pace. Placed 5/ 30 in my AG.
The race shirt was a long sleeves tech shirt!
I ran a mile before the race started to loosen my calves. Then when I got to the race I ran another half a mile on accident trying to find the bathrooms.
