On Saturday, I ran my 9th half marathon at the Aquarium half. This is a small race, but it’s a must do if your local! I did PR by a few seconds but I did not hit my 1:44 goal. 🙁
The Expo: There was no expo for this race. I picked up my packet from a local running store.
What I Wore:
Before: My wake up call was 6:00AM for an 8:15AM race. I ate most of a chocolate chip bagel from Panera with chocolate NuttZo butter on top when I woke up. I took my Advocare O2 Gold at 7:15AM (I love this stuff!!) During: I brought the same package of cliff shot blocks that I used during the rock n roll half, since I only ate one. I ate one right before we started, one at mile 6, and one at mile 9. It was hard to eat them, but I’m glad I did. Eventually I will eat the whole package during a race! I also ran with watermelon nuun. After: I refueled like a champ with some Dip N Dots and a smoothie from Whole Foods. I also had half a pint of Ben and Jerry’s!
Like I said before, this is a smaller race, so there were no pacers. I am really bad about pacing myself. The plan was to start out slower, mile 1: 8-8:10. I did hit this mark, but mile 2-5 were too fast and I felt it in mile 6. This was my slowest mile at 9:01. I spent the rest of the race trying to catch back up. This is the same thing that happened in my last half- I’m not sure what is going on in mile 5-6 but I need to fix it! My fastest mile was mile 11 at 7:45. My average pace was 8:03. My watched said we ran 13.22 miles, my time was 1:46:10. I got 6th in my age group out 59, and 17th overall female out of 446.
Terrain: This course is nice and flat!
Post Race Food/Drinks: They had the usual bananas and bagels. They also had some OJ and breakfast burritos. The best thing they had was Dip N Dots, but you did have to pay for them- luckily my mom took me to this race and bought some for me!
Weather: It was like 41 when we started but it warmed up nicely. I was cold for the first mile but then I felt great after that!
Port-A-Potties: They had about 10 plenty of port-a-potties at the start and a few throughout the race. They also had some bathrooms located in the aquarium.
Entertainment: There was no entertainment during this race, but that was fine with me since this was a cheaper race.
Number of Times I’ve Ran This Race: This was my 2nd time to run this half. I’ve ran the 5k also.
Would I Run This Race Again: Yes!!
Overall: This is a great race for locals! Tulsa does not have that many half marathons, that aren’t trail races, so this is a great one!
