On Sunday, I ran my 10th half marathon at the OKC Marathon. This was a crazy race!! They had been forecasting bad weather all week- I was hoping it would miss us, but no such luck. They delayed the start time by almost 2 hours to avoid the storm. I was okay with this because there was some lighting and heavy rainfall. Ben and I waited under a parking garage with all of these lovely people.
The delay caused a few problems for me. 1. I didn’t eat a big breakfast (which is normal for me) and I only brought 4 chews, since I knew I would probably only eat one… well about 30 minutes into the delay I was starving. I ended up eating all 4 chews before we even started. I could feel my stomach growling almost the whole way! 2. I had to go to the bathroom twice during the delay and both times when I walked out to the porta-potties, it was not raining. Of course it started to pour during both of my bathroom breaks… we had to run back to the parking garage each time. I was wearing a cotton jacket, so the rain made me a little cold when I was waiting in the garage. 3. There was a lot of standing around time that didn’t help my legs. Also I had to start at the back of the corrals after the delay because everyone was so crammed in. Some people didn’t make it in to the corrals, I’m guessing they had to jump in when they found an opening. But, with all those issues aside, I’m happy they delayed it because I did not want to get poured on.
The Expo: My friend picked up my bib for me, since I was going to get to OKC late.
What I Wore:
I wore this Oiselle bra and this Oiselle top. I wore my old lulu skirt that I wear pretty much all the time. I also wore a BICband, Zulu socks, and a throw away jacket that I gave to Ben before we started. I did not take my Ipod since the weather was going to be bad.
Before: My wake up call was 4:50 AM for a 6:30AM race. I only ate 4 bites of a chocolate chip bagel from Panera with chocolate NuttZo butter on top when I woke up. I also ate half of a package of peanut M&Ms. I took my O2 Gold at 5:30AM (I love this stuff!!) During: I brought 4 cliff shot blocks that I ate before the race even started, so I ran this race with no fuel. I also ran with watermelon nuun. After: I could not decide what I wanted to eat for awhile and then it hit me… queso! We went to Toby Keiths restaurant and got the queso, which I ate most of. We split a cheeseburger, but it wasn’t sitting right so I only had a few bites. When we got home late, I had some ice cream!
Like I said before, this race was crazy! I started in the back, around the 5:30 pace group- not a good way to start out but at least I got in a corral. I passed the 4:00 and 2:00 hour pacers but I never saw the 1:45 pacers. The first few miles were pretty crowded and the streets were wet with alot of puddles. I spent most of my time trying to move around people. I was trying to PR but around mile 3 I knew that was not going to happen. I was tried, hungry, and my legs were not feeling it. I have ran the most i’ve ever ran these past few months and it finally caught up with me during this race. I felt like we were running uphill for most of the race, but this could have been my legs just crapping out on me. I have ran this race before and I don’t remember the hills being a big issue. My average pace was 8:39. My time was 1:53:35. Race stats: 35 out of 1080 in my age group, 175 overall female out of 6053, and 669 overall out of 11,500.
Ben said they were showing different parts of the race on the big screen at the finish line.
Terrain: It felt like this race was just straight uphill. I know it wasn’t but it was really hilly.
Post Race Food/Drinks: They have the best post race food of any race I have ever been too! They have the usually: bananas, bagels, apples, oranges, and chocolate milk. They also have ever cookie known to man, rice crispy treats, fruit cups, and hamburgers! Ever race should model there post race food after OKC.
Weather: In a word: crazy!! It actually did turn out to be a nice day. When I finished the temp was in the 70’s.
Port-A-Potties: They had alot of port-a-potties but this was a big race, so there were still long lines.
Entertainment: There was quite a few people cheering us on durning the race. I was surprised by this because of the weather and the delayed start.
Number of Times I’ve Ran This Race: This was my 3rd time to run this half. Last year I ran the full.
Would I Run This Race Again: Yes!!
The Hotel and What I Packed: We stayed with a friend who lives in OKC.
Overall: Love this race!! The OKC Marathon was where I ran my first half and full.
