My first half ironman race review…
I was so nervous the day before and I didn’t get much sleep. Our alarm clock went off at 3AM… There was really no reason to get up that early but both me and Ben like to have a lot of time before races. I had planned on eating a scone, applesauce, and a few pieces of my homemade protein bars. However, my stomach was in knots from the nerves and the last thing it wanted was food. But I did mange to eat most of the scone and a few bites of applesauce. Before we left I wrote some Bible verses on my hands and arm to remind me that He is bigger than anything I could ever face during the race.
When we got to the race and it was raining and I was worried it was going to make the roads wet and slippery while we were on the bikes. Luckily it stopped raining before the race started and it didn’t really affect the roads. Once we parked we walked are bikes down the big hill to get to the transition area. I took my little bike past all of the incredibly nice bikes and found my spot. It was nice to see a few other bikes without aero bars, it made my bike feel better 🙂
Swim: The swim actually went better than I thought it would and I’m so glad because it gave me extra time on the dreaded bike. This was a wave start and I was the 4th (I think) wave to go. I started to get nervous when I would look around and there were only guys around me. It was’t until after the race I realized there were only 2 waves of females and the other wave went before mine. But I started to think I wasn’t going to make the time cut. It felt like all of the guys around me were swimming like elephants, they were slamming their arms down so hard. I had to go straight up and down serval times to avoid getting kicked in the face. There were a few times when I looked up and I was headed straight for the trees.. oops. Overall the swim was good. time: 47 mins
Bike: I was really nervous about making the time cut for the bike. I was also scared of the huge downhills. I felt good the first 5 miles of the bike and then my stomach started to hurt pretty bad, I thought I might have to stop and throw up. 😷 I also left half my bike nutrition on my towel, oops. I don’t think I would have eaten it anyways… The thought of food made me want to throw up even more. I think it was the two big mouthfuls of lake water I got towards the end of the swim. 👎🏼 but I did manage to eat one honey stringer waffle, 2 pretzels, and one applesauce I had during transition 1.. that is the only nutrition I had the whole race😳 I did drink some water and Gatorade though.
I made good time the first 15 miles and then I hit the wind. That section past once we hit the first major hill. The only time the entire race that I passed someone on the bike, was on the uphills. Once I came to the downhill I started to lay on the brakes. This hill was really a cliff and the only thing between you and the side of the cliff was a little railing, this hill also had turns.. yikes! I was talking to Jesus the whole way down. Haha! Once I got towards the end of the bike, the wind started to pick up and I just could not move my legs anymore. The wind was killing me and it was never ending, I kept telling myself just make it past the turn and the wind will be at your back. No such luck. I think I avg. 9 or 10mps the last 20 miles. 🙁 My knee was also killing me and I started to get discouraged when I realized there was not that many people around. I knew that I would make the bike time but I started to get worried about the run, which was the only thing I wasn’t worried about going into the race. I also had a side blow out on one of my tires. I didn’t even realize it until we got home but that could have stopped my race. Thank you Lord for always watching over me. time: 4:20 hours.. Yikes! I hate the bike!!
Run: Once I started to run, my knee felt better and I knew I would finish. But, my stomach got worse and I just wanted to be done. There was no way I was going to eat anything but I did drink some water and Gatorade. I was already pretty dehydrated by the time I got to the run and the heat was intense. The run was 2 laps around the lake and we got to watch all the people swimming and enjoying the water when we were running. I wanted to just jump in and cool off. I saw Ben during the first lap and I realized he wasn’t that far ahead of me. We ended up finishing together! My overall time was 7:54. I know it’s slow but I was just happy to finish. We didn’t train like we should have and I had some unexpected issues come up, but we will be training hard for Louisville. I hope to get my half time down at some point. I also forgot to put on sunscreen and I looked like a lobster after. In fact you can still see the tri tats that were on my arm. I get some weird looks at the grocery store! Haha.

This race was tough. The heat, and the major uphills and downhills, and the wind on the bike course was insane. Im glad to have my first 70.3 in the books!❥❥❥ “My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in your weakness.” 2 Cor 12:19.
I also purchased the coveted name shirt at the expo and I am super excited to wear it since my finishers shirt is too big. <-story of my life lol #shortgirlproblems .We have started training for Louisville in October! We really wanted to sign up for Austin 70.3, New Orleans 70.3, and Ironman Texas!! We have already started saving money, but we’ll see if we have enough to register for all of them.
